It frightens me when I see the shadow
Of my past cross your face
I find my knuckles white, but loosen
My grip on you to God's relentless grace
I love you and admire you
Just as you are now
Sweet, round face looking up at me
No anxiety--just wonder--wrinkles your brow
I'm afraid for that to change. Please don't!
The years will only harden and plunder
Stay here--nothing to lose, everything to gain
No worries crowding out your wonder
If you grow, let it be in grace and knowledge
If you age, let it be in prayer
Deeper into the open arms of Christ
Away from the world's choking cares
God's not afraid of your questions
Don't feel silly when you ask Him
About the things you don't understand
Because further up and further in
There's only more wonder!
